Horsetooth Reservoir

We fished Horsetooth Reservoir. We were using blown up night crawlers and minnows, we were letting the boat drift so we were almost trolling very slow. We ended up catching smallmouth bass and sunfish. We stayed untill dark and thats when the bites stoped.

Mckay Lake and Hidden Pond

We went bass fishing on Mckay Lake and Hidden Pond. We ended up catching a bunch of bass throughout the day. The bass were pretty small but they were fun to catch and catching a lot made it even better. Tyler used a swim bait and I used a small tube jig. We were reeling in fast and the lures were towards the top of the water, when we reeled in slow bass would follow it but would not eat it.

Carter Lake

We fished Carter Lake for the past two weeks and have been catching a lot of walleye. We jigged live worms right off the bottom in about 12 ft of water and have been catching a lot of walleye. Most of them were not keeping size but they are fun to catch. We have caught a couple that have been good size but we released them. We usually fish for about 7 hours but the bite is big when the sun starts to go down, but when it gets dark the bite stops again.

Carter Lake

We fished Carter Lake and ended up catching small walleye’s and I ended up with a good sized rainbow trout. We were jigging worms and black marabou’s. The lake had lots of fishing pressure. Some people with boats trolled very close to us. We were checked twice in the same day for fishing licenses and made sure I had the safety equipment on the boat. I was not mad that they checked us twice because I know that I had all of my safety equipment and license on me and I was glad to see that they were checking everything and watching the boats closely.

Stearns, Jackson, and Carter Lake Report

Stearns Lake, Jackson Lake, Carter Lake

This last weekend I fished Stearns, Jackson, and Carter Lake. We fished for catfish at Stearns and had some very small bites but nothing that we could hook. We fished Jackson and caught a couple of rainbow trout but nothing special. Since I was not catching fish I decided to head up to Carter Lake with a couple of buddies and we ended up catching a couple of rainbow trout and a bunch of walleyes. There was one point where we all 3 had fish on at the same time and a couple of times we had doubles on. We were fishing with worms on the bottom right off the boat in about 8 ft of water.

Bear Creek Reservoir

We fished Bear Creek Reservoir for a little over 8 hours. We ended up catching a bunch of small walleye, a couple of trout, and one smallmouth bass. We were using blown up night crawlers about 2 feet off the bottom.  It was mostly nice throughout the day but towards the end of our trip the wind came up out of nowhere and blew very hard which made it hard to cast where we wanted our bait to be. There were a lot of people who were fishing and some of them would come right next to us and cast their line right next to ours. There was only 2 times that they actually crossed us and we had to get it untangled.

Carter Lake Fishing Part 2

Carter Lake

We fished Carter Lake for a little over 12 hours. We caught some rainbow trout and then we started getting into the walleye while jigging so we decided to stay in that spot and keep jigging for the walleye. When we caught the rainbows we were trolling blue foxes and when we were getting into the walleye we were using leeches on jig heads. We all got burnt from being on the boat for so long but it was worth it by catching walleye like we did.

Jackson Lake

We fished Jackson Lake for a little over 9 hours. We were using spinners and ended up catching a big carp, some wipers, and some rainbow trout. The deepest part of the lake that we saw on the fish finder was 15 ft deep, but we were fishing in 10 ft of water for the most part. We ended up keeping a couple of rainbows and they were very pink meat so we smoked the fish that night and ate them, and they were really good eating. We saw other fisherman out there but they ended up with only a couple of fish but again they were out there for a couple of hours and we were out there for a little over 9.

Tom Frost

I fished Tom Frost from the afternoon all the way until 7 pm. I was using blown up worms at first but I was not catching any fish. So I put on a blue fox and started lure fishing and still nothing, so I put on a black marabou jig and nothing on that so I decided that it was time to leave. The water temperature was warm, I am not sure what the temperature was but it was warm. A lot of people were fishing also, so maybe there was too much fishing pressure for the fish to bite.

Mckay Lake

I fished Mckay lake all day and into the evening. I was using small jigs and black marabous to try to catch a bass or a crappie. I ended up with only one bite and missed it. While I was fishing off the pier, I droped my under water aqua view into the water and hooked my camcorder to it and recorded some under water footage. I watched the video the next day and saw that I caught bass, crappie, and carp on camera. So even though I did not catch any fish, I got some under water video of them.

Shadow Mountain Reservoir

I fished the inlet to Shadow Mountain Reservoir for 2 days. I had lots of bites but as soon as they hit the bait was gone. I still ended up catching some fish which included kokanee salmon, rainbow trout, brown trout, and sucker fish. Most of them were small but there were a couple of nice fish. The weather changed on me so much, it rained, snowed, and then it got sunny. I was using blown up night crawlers on both poles and they seem to be the only thing working. I talked to some fly fisherman and some people using lures and they were not catching any fish.

Aurora Reservoir

We fished Aurora Reservoir for about 8 hours. I ended up only catching one fish while Tyler caught around 6. Tyler caught 2 rainbows that were both around 3 lbs. My fish that I caught was  smaller than his. We were using blown up worms and we were fishing on the dam. There were a lot of people out fishing but no one else was catching fish. There were also a lot of army helicopters and fighter jets flying all over. It was sunny for the most part but the wind was blowing most of the time and then the wind would calm down a little and then would stop and start blowing again.

Stearns Lake Report

Stearns Lake

I fished Stearns Lake from 8 am to 4:30 pm trying to catch catfish and maybe a tiger muskie. I ended up with two really hard bites but as soon as they hit hard they would not hit again. I was using dead shiners on both rods. It was cold out there and when the wind picked up in the afternoon it got very cold, I thought to myself to stick it out and I will or might have another chance for a fish but nothing.

St. Vrain River

We fished the St. Vrain River for 9 hours on Friday. We caught some very nice fish and there were only a couple of fish that were small. We were using the blown up worm method and used shiners. We caught a lot of different species of trout. We caught rainbow trout, brown trout, brook trout, cutthroat trout, and lake trout. We also had some bigger strikes but after they hit hard they would have already took our bait. We only saw one other guy fishing and he was fly fishing and he ended up not catching any fish.

Carter Lake

We fished Carter Lake for around 7 hours. We used rapalas, blue foxes, spoons, live minnows, and worms. We ended up catching 4 rainbow trout throughout the day. We caught 2 of the rainbows on the rapala and the other 2 on the blue fox. We caught the 4 fish while trolling 4 poles. We had 2 of the poles on the downriggers down about 12 ft and the other 2 poles we just let out about 75 yards of line and put them in the rod holders. Throughout the day we saw around 7 or 8 boats that came onto the lake. There was a lot of small logs in the water so when going fast on a boat be careful.

Horsetooth Reservoir

We took the boat out fishing on Horsetooth Reservoir. We fished the reservoir for a little over 7 hours and we fished it hard. We tried blue foxes, spoons, jigs, worms, and rapalas and did not even manage to catch one fish. It was cold outside with the wind blowing very hard on us. There was quite a few times where the wakes on the lake were big and would hit the side of the boat and water would splash into the boat getting us wet. When those times came I had the bilge pump on to let the water out. We ended up getting some video footage of the water splashing into the boat and some underwater footage but even with the camera under water all we picked up was bottom no fish. Before I go back to Horsetooth I am going to wait for the water temperature warm up a little.

Arvada Reservoir

We fished Arvada Reservoir and caught a lot of rainbow trout. They were all small in size and all stockers but it was still fun to catch them. We used worms and purple power bait. I missed tons of bites and I think it was because they were smaller fish and some of them didn’t bite hard enough to set the hook on them. A ranger came by to see how we were doing in which he saw us catching fish, in which he told us that no one else that he had talked to was doing as well as we were. It was a little windy but the temperature was around in the 50’s to 60’s. There were a lot of small boats going out and we could see them trolling a little ways from shore and they didn’t look like they were catching anything.
