each spring many east coast anglers await the arrival of the "cobia run".
the BoldWater office is located minutes from the marina so we keep an emergency cobia bag ready for "the call". this call is usually panicked while someone on the other end is loading the boat saying "the cobia are outfront - LET'S GO!". Our emergency bag contains: fishing clothes, cobia jigs, extra sunglasses, flip flops, towels and deodorant. Near the bag is a slightly worn out 1976 quarter that my wife and i have to flip when we get this call (it's nearly impossible for both of us to leave the shop during the week). the deodorant and towel allows us to do a "sink bath" after a quick cobia trip. early this spring i had won the coin toss after getting off the phone with Capt. Scott Bussen on the Relentless. he had called telling us of the cobia caught the day before. my son was out of school and anxious to fish so we grabbed our bag and joined our friends mike and captain scott. fishing was good and we sight casted to many eager fish.
after a great afternoon of fishing we took pictures heading back to port.
my son alden noticed that our largest cobia of the day had something sticking out of his throat.
we were surprised to find a bat ray half swallowed. this was a first for any of us to see. in the spring large schools of bat rays make their way up the coast but i would have never expected to see one eaten by a cobia. we are still trying to figure out how he found room to enhale our squid tipped jig.
